What is Inner Child Work? (Lessons from My Journey)
If you’re here, maybe you feel it too.
That quiet pull inside, like a whisper from a version of you long forgotten. For years, I didn’t understand it. I thought I had no traumas, no wounds from the past. I believed I had left childhood far behind. But life has a way of inviting us to look closer. And for me, it started with an unexpected conversation: not with someone else, but with my own inner child.
The Moment of Realisation
When I began my healing journey, I wasn’t searching for “inner child work.” Honestly, I wasn’t even sure what that meant. But during my sessions with Lyna, my guide through this odyssey, the signs became impossible to ignore.
I remember her asking, “Call in your inner child. See if you can feel him beside you.” At first, it felt strange. But as I closed my eyes, I saw him. A small boy, unsure, a little distant. I realised he had been waiting for me all along.
He was carrying fears I never acknowledged. Loneliness, a deep fear of abandonment, and a longing for safety. I had spent so many years trying to move forward in life that I never thought to look back and take his hand.
"Healing happens until we die. It’s not discouraging; it’s just the nature of it." (Session 01)
What Inner Child Work Really Means
Inner child work is not about blaming our parents or rewriting the past. It’s about recognising that inside us lives the version of ourselves that needed more love, more safety, more understanding.
For me, it meant speaking to my younger self as a protector, not as a victim. I began to understand that some patterns in my life, the push-pull in relationships, the craving for security but fear of closeness, were not random. They were echoes of my childhood.
"Do you remember anything in your childhood, any situations where you felt abandoned? Not so much rejected but abandoned?" (Session 01)
As I reflected deeper, I realised my relationship with my father played a huge part. He was never the superhero I wanted him to be. And when that illusion broke, a part of me closed off.
Lessons from My Journey
Working with my inner child taught me that healing is not a straight line. It’s a spiral, revisiting places you thought you had passed long ago but seeing them with new eyes.
Here’s what I learned, and maybe it will help you too:
Acknowledge the child within. Even if you can’t see them clearly, trust they are there, waiting.
Speak with kindness. I started saying simple things: “You are safe with me.” “You are not alone.”
Give them space to play. Lyna once told me to imagine my inner child playing, doing karate, or even joining me on daily walks. It may sound simple, but it builds trust.
Physical activities help. Hitting a punching bag, walking barefoot on the earth, or even tending to a garden can reconnect you to that inner part.
Most importantly, I understood this: my inner child doesn’t need to be “fixed.” He needs to be seen, held, and loved.
"Anytime you do with your inner child, you nurture yourself." (Session 01)
The Ongoing Odyssey
This is not a one-time conversation. It’s an ongoing relationship. And it’s not always easy.
There are days I feel deeply connected, and others when I forget to check in. But every time I return to him, I feel it: a quiet strength growing inside me. My inner child is no longer just a passenger on this journey. He is my companion.
Healing the inner child is part of our greater human odyssey. It’s the return to a place we left behind, not to live there, but to retrieve what was lost: our sense of wonder, our courage, our openness to love.
"I realised, okay, I carry all this with me... It was like a second body. Carrying all of it. It was overwhelming and releasing." (Session 01)
A Question for You
As you read this, pause for a moment.
Can you feel your own inner child?
Can you remember the last time you asked them how they were feeling?
Maybe, like me, you thought you were fine. But there’s always a deeper layer waiting for your attention.
I invite you to take that first step. Not because you need to be “fixed,” but because you deserve to feel whole.
This journey changed my life. If you feel called, it can change yours too.
